Amethyst Ring

My Dad had a dear friend, Tom, who gifted my mother with this amethyst. Her lore was that it came from Russia and was from the collection of Katherine the Great. At least that’s what Tom told her. It turns out it didn’t, it’s not worth much at all. But its sentimental value is huge. Little things that are ‘worthless’ can be treasures, after all. When my Mom passed away in 1986, this piece came my way. The amethyst was mounted with a gold loop around it that hung off a very simple chain. It was a little too simple for me and the way it hung and looked, wasn’t really my cup of tea.  So, I took the piece to my collaborator, Nick at Patronik Designs, and we made a ring out of it. I brought him one of my sketches and shared the idea coming out of my mind’s eye. It’s fun to take something in your head and make it real, and this ring delights. I like chunky rings, and most of my pieces have an asymmetry to them. With this piece, it’s the combination of polished and brushed gold which shows off the stone and can be mixed and matched easily.

I love how it looks on my middle or index finger which gives it a great edge with the right outfit. When I wear it I always think of Mom which makes it even more special. Every piece has a story.  Magic indeed.
