Charms Equal Magic

I’ve always wanted a charm bracelet but never wanted one “off the shelf.”  One day, as my sister and I were going through old jewelry pieces from family I had the inspiration to take bits and bobs and make them into charms. I went to our local jeweler, Nick, who owns Patronik in Burlingame who works magic. And slowly but surely he helped bring my vision for my charm bracelet to life.

The Pearl is the old head of a stickpin that was my Mom’s. Which now hangs inside her baby ring on the bracelet. The black onyx with a diamond, was the top of my dad’s army ring. The A with a diamond came home to me from Greece moons ago when it was my parents first and only trip there. It was on a necklace that I no longer loved. Slowly, pieces came to life. My husbands high school ring top. And so on and so forth.

Each piece has sentimental value from something before. My favorite: the gold petal-like piece with a tiny pearl that was the top of a big broach my mom wore on her coat. Turns out it’s really gold and I love it.

When all the charms were made I picked out a chunky gold bracelet from Italy and Nick mounted each one. So, taking things with sentimental value that I’d never wear and remaking them was truly magic. I love this bracelet and how it came from so many memories. Magic from the mundane indeed.
